Keep Looking Up!

September 2009 Astrological Forecast

By GiGi Sosnoski, Motivational Astrologer

This month we get to celebrate the Spring Equinox as the Sun moves into the balancing sign of Libra on 23 of September.   As the Sun enters Libra the day and night are of equal length, and from that time on the days become longer than the nights – a welcome change after any Winter Blues we may have been feeling!   Much will transpire planetarily prior to this event - manifesting as various energies that we can tap into and perhaps utilize for more personal benefit and growth in our lives.   Let's take a look at the highlights of the Heavens this month when it comes to the Lunar and Planetary motions and how they can affect us:

The Lunar Cycle for September:   The New and Full Moons

A Lunar Cycle begins with the onset of the New Moon, waxing into a Full Moon, then waning until the next New Moon begins a new cycle. It represents the building up, culmination, and release of various events and energies in our lives.  The Lunar Cycle was the basis for the earliest of calendars, as New Moons were observed to determine the beginning of each new month (“moonth”).   Just as a year represents the cycle of the Earth around the Sun, so the month originally marked the cycle of the Moon around the Earth.   But the direct connection between Moon and month was lost when the calendar was fixed into months of particular numbers of days, since the Lunar Cycle varies slightly in length and doesn't evenly divide the year. Unlike our current calendar of 12 months, the Moon has about 13 cycles each year, with about 29 days in each cycle (New Moon to New Moon).

Knowing when a New Moon occurs is always helpful as it gives us 13 times a year to start fresh and to begin again (so forget about the pressure of the once-a-year New Years resolution!)   A New Moon signifies a time when we can start anew and set into motion the things we want to actualize by the time of the Full Moon, which occurs about two weeks later. It's always a good idea to take some time at the New Moon to think about what you want to accomplish and how to go about it in the weeks ahead.

New Moon of 20 August to the Full Moon on 5 September:

The strong New Moon in Leo occurring on the 20 th of August gave us a more outgoing and outspoken emotional energy to work with, encouraging us to take action on our creative and expressive needs.   This dramatic Leo energy carries over into the first part of September, reaching culmination with the Full Moon in the sensitive sign of Pisces on the 5 th of September.

The Full Moon represents a period of consummation or completion in our lives, when whatever we put into action around the New Moon can be brought to some form of culmination.   This doesn't mean that whatever we started has to be done, but by the time of the Full Moon we should have made enough progress on our longer-term goals to be able to recognize our accomplishment. Full Moons are also times of heightened emotional intensity, and both positive and negative emotions can have strong impacts on us at these times – so be sure to work toward the positive!

This Full Moon in Pisces encourages us to be more aware of our intuitive energy, and gives us an opportunity to explore our spiritual and creative natures.   It is an excellent chance to work more with our dreams, imaginations, visualizations and artistic expression. This is a period when we can feel more sympathy for others, express more compassion in our every day dealings, and be more receptive to those we come into contact with.   This is also a perfect time for bringing into alignment our spiritual and intuitive faculties, perhaps using this Full Moon culmination phase to tap into a more Universal wisdom and knowledge (as befitting the Pisces energy).

In the two weeks following this Full Moon you can use the Lunar cycle energy to your best advantage by getting rid of what is no longer necessary in your life, making way for the new, just as we move toward the next New Moon and start the cycle (i.e. opportunity) over again.   This is a advantageous time to make a difference by giving to charity the things that are no longer in keeping with your true needs, donating time to help someone or contributing to a worthwhile cause.   This orientation is then carried though to the New Moon, which heralds another time of fresh starts and new undertakings.

New Moon in Virgo – 19 September

This New Moon in the detailed-oriented sign of Virgo occurs on 19 September, and will help to activate the analytical and rational sides of our nature.   This can assist us in tapping into a more orderly and detailed expression of our selves and our daily-doings.   The New Moon progression from the outgoing and generous prior sign of Leo into the more introverted and shy feeling of Virgo gives us the opportunity to take our big plans and make them substantial by reviewing their finer points and details.

During this Virgo lunar cycle our responses will be more prudent and meticulous toward our work, health matters, and those we care about, thus making for a great time to take care of all the items on your to-do list.   Although we should guard against becoming too fussy or critical (guised as wanting to be “helpful”), the best use of this period is to keep productive and to incorporate better organizational strategies for future directions and goals.   Take some time on the day of the New Moon to plan out what's most important for you to accomplish over the next few weeks – making an actual to-do list would be a great expression of that Virgo thoroughness, but even just thinking things over will help you set your goals in your mind and help align your actions with what you want to achieve.

The Mercury Cycle – going Retrograde!

Mercury, known as the Messenger God in Roman mythology, rules all things pertaining to communications, transportation, and information.   This planet is what we look to in our Astrology charts to understand how we can best express ourselves and how we can better utilize our intellect and mental abilities. Currently, Mercury's position in our solar system is in the equilibrium-seeking sign of Libra, which highlights a time for learning, teaching, writing, interactions with others and exploring new interests and knowledge. But this path will be disrupted when Mercury turns retrograde on the 7 th of September, moving “backward” from the sociable sign of Libra into the more shy sign of Virgo on the 18 th of September, bringing a change in how Mercury will be   effecting us.

Mercury Retrograde is a tricky time, occurring three times a year, and represents a time of confusion, mix-ups, mis-quotes and mis-haps - especially regarding how we express ourselves. This can be a time of breakdowns in our communications, and endeavors that are begun or agreements made during this period will often end up unraveling or not materializing as we had planned.   Not all Mercury Retrogrades effect us equally, but if Mercury is contacting a planet in our Astrology chart when it goes retrograde (or later, at the end of the retrograde) the retrograde cycle may hit us especially strongly.

With Mercury currently in Libra we seek to find the harmony and balance within relationships, but as it retrogrades into the sign of Virgo we might start to see more of the flaws and imperfections in situations around us, and need to guard against being too perfectionistic with regard to our expectations.   Always keep in mind that with Mercury retrograde there is a greater potential for miscommunications, mechanical malfunctions, travel delays, derailments in negotiations, and we usually find an increased incidence of mistakes, confusion and stress in our lives.   As a rule, Mercury retrograde periods are not an advantageous time to sign any contracts, schedule major negotiations, start a new job, make a major purchase or begin a new project - as the outcome may not be what we hoped for.

Although many have apprehension of the onset of a Mercury retrograde period,   it can be an good opportunity to look back on our past experiences and learn from them - bringing new awareness as to how we can progress forward with more constructive growth and positive direction regarding our future goals.   This can be an advantageous time for realizing what issues or situations are no longer worthwhile for us to continue carrying, and is a great time for clearing out what is no longer in keeping with our true personas.   As well, Mercury Retrograde is a favorable time for planning, organizing and getting things arranged and ready to begin once Mercury has returned to its direct motion. The best use of this period is to stay flexible and regroup, rethink, and reconsider matters, and make plans to move forward when Mercury finally does at the end of this month.

Mercury ends its retrograde or “reversing” (and delaying!) period on the 30 th of September, still in Virgo, so we'll be entering October with a critical eye to our undertakings, but with a more favorable momentum to successfully implement our goals plans and activities. From October onwards things should flow more easily when it comes to our communications, decisions and directions.

Pluto Direct in Capricorn

Pluto, the planet of transformation, ruler of world-wide trends and the influence of the masses, ends its retrograde period and goes direct on the 12 th of September.   Capricorn energy is conservative in feeling and represents business, government, positions of power and authority, while Pluto governs large organizations, political movements, world economy, as well as metaphysical and environmental issues.   This Pluto/Capricorn pairing (which will continue until March 2023!) indicates a time when these aspects of our lives become a serious focus.   We can anticipate slow but transformational (transcendental) change in these areas, perhaps manifesting as a significant wake-up call regarding issues we need to be paying more attention to.   As Pluto is now direct in its intent and motion, we can foresee a time when much that has been hidden (Pluto) is now revealed – including the deeper issues of ourselves and our lives.

On a worldly level, Pluto entering into Capricorn was the Astrological trigger for the current round of economic and financial restructurings.   Pluto in the prior sign of optimistic Sagittarius represented a time of financial and economic excess, and when it entered into the serious and responsible sign of Capricorn the bill came due.   August passed by without much challenge to the returning optimism of the markets, but since we've got another 14 years of Pluto in Capricorn to go it seems likely that there'll be some more adjustments along the way.   Pluto turning direct may bring some problems to light and challenge the recovery – but whatever happens, keep in mind that Pluto is fundamentally a transformational force, and when it tears things down it's only to make way for something better.

Saturn opposition Uranus

Saturn and Uranus, two of the outer planets in our solar system, have been in strong alignment for the past year and will be exact in their opposition to each other on 16 September , in the contrasting signs of Virgo and Pisces . With the Saturn-Uranus dichotomy, we see two celestial bodies that are diametrically opposed in their energies and considered enemies in their approach to activities in our lives.   Saturn is like a strict school master that likes to have the lessons laid out, traditional ways of learning honored, with strict structures and hard rules in place.   Uranus is like the rebellious Bohemian, wanting to break free of the “old-school” way of doing things and find inventive and perhaps disruptive ways of expressing change.   The opposition is a 180 degree planetary aspect that represents the conflict between two forces – in this case the breaking down of outdated structures in order to manifest new ones. We're seeing this dynamic at work in the restructuring of financial institutions, protests against aggression, and the growing awareness of the need for action on climate change. During this period we can anticipate more of these areas of concern being highlighted.

Venus into Virgo

Venus, the planet representing love, creativity and relationships will be moving from the theatrically expressive sign of Leo into the more reserved demeanor of Virgo on the 21 st of September.   During this time we may find that the way we demonstrate love and enjoyment in our lives shifts from a more extroverted display (Leo) to a more reserved, introverted expression (Virgo).   This period marks a time when we become more practical and pragmatic in areas regarding affections and artistry – being more cognizant of the details, nuances, and specific issues regarding our lives and interactions with others. With Venus in the Earth sign of analytical Virgo, beauty and relationship issues will need to make more sense, be more serviceable, and have a practical and purposeful place in our lives. We do need to guard against the more challenging traits of a Venus/Virgo pairing which is a tendency to be overly critical (with ourselves and significant others), too detail oriented, meticulous, picky, and worrisome. This is a great planet/sign pairing for getting our lives more organized – becoming more conscientious in our work, health or diet as well as being of service to others is an effective use of this transit.

Sun into Libra – Spring Equinox

The Sun, representing our personal power and vitality, moves into the harmonizing and artistic sign of Libra on the 23 rd of September, the Spring Equinox.   Style and aesthetics are highlighted now, but it's also an advantageous time to explore all our relationships – with ourselves, with others, and with the Universe.   Libra, an Air Sign, represents the need to be accommodating, balancing and peaceful in our all dealings, and so this energy brings forth a period when we look for more equilibrium in all our interactions.   It's a time when we can open ourselves to opportunities for new encounters that will be both mentally stimulating and harmonizing in our lives, but also a great period for bringing more peace and equality to an existing relationship.   During this transit we may come to learn how relationships in our lives mirror ourselves, and that meeting others halfway, learning to compromise and finding more commonality between us is the lesson.

But not all is in balance with Libra as the ability to make decisions has always been difficult for this sign, thus this can represent a time when we may find ourselves weighing the pros and cons a lot more and having a hard time coming to a decision.   Also, be aware of getting trapped in a passive-aggressive approach to things during this period (as Libras sometimes do), or perhaps taking on a more superficial or self-serving view of situations.

Key words representing the Libra energy are symmetry and equilibrium, and so this is a wonderful opportunity to welcome in the start of Spring while also considering the areas of our own life that could benefit from having more harmony and balance.

Until next month...

Astrology is a wonderful tool for self-awareness, self-activation and self-actualization.   Properly used, Astrology gives us great insight into how we can improve ourselves and how we interact with the people and situations around us.   In looking to the September skies we can gain a better appreciation for the planetary energies for the month ahead and understand how to use those energies to improve our lives.

This is just a brief overview of the planetary energies operating in September, which applies to everyone. You can gain better awareness of how the energies apply in your life by understanding where the planets are moving in your own Astrology chart - but that requires some study, or a reading from an Astrologer!

Happy September!

August 2009 Astrological Forecast

By GiGi Sosnoski

This month we get to experience an assortment of energies as many planets change signs and help us to activate different modes of expression in our lives.   Emphasized this month is not only the home-oriented and nurturing sign of Cancer, but the loving extroversion of Leo and the detailed and organized energy of Virgo.   August brings forth a variety of energies and expressions that we can draw upon and utilize for more fulfillment in the weeks ahead – lets take a closer look:

The Lunar Cycle for August - The New and Full Moons:

We ended the month of July with a strong New Moon/Solar Eclipse in the critical degree of 29 Cancer on 22 July, and this nurturing and home-oriented energy is what we are still perceiving as it is carried over into the month of August.   This family-focused and maternal water sign begins our month with a more contemplative, gentle and protective feel – which leads up to the Full Moon in the independent, inventive and detached sign of Aquarius on 6 August.

This Full Moon is also a Lunar Eclipse, and will be occurring in the Uranian-ruled Air sign of idealistic, bohemian and group-oriented Aquarius. This brings with it a more humanitarian, intellectual and unique way of viewing ourselves and the world around us.   This would include how we see and deal with our families as we have just come off the New Moon in Cancer. This is time when we feel a greater need to express our unique opinions, be more inventive in our plans, join up and take a stand for the “greater good” and perhaps become more community focused. During this cycle our feelings are more geared toward finding new solutions, thinking outside the box, expressing the unusual sides of our nature (quirky?), seeking out new technologies or advancements in our lives and joining up with like-minded individuals.

Events that occur on or around the period of an eclipse take on extra significance.   As such, in the weeks to come we're likely to see more Aquarian energy being brought forth into our lives – perhaps growing in humanitarian endeavors with a more cooperative spirit in dealing with others as the result.   The Aquarian air sign can also help manifest new technologies or ways of connecting to others, perhaps helping us to have a greater sense of community or equality in the process.   In the days that follow the eclipse we may have opportunities to see our situations differently, perhaps gaining some new perspective or getting motivated to take on a new direction.

The Full Moon relates to a period of consummation or completion in our lives, when our hopes and dreams can hopefully be brought to culmination.   This orientation is then carried though to the New Moon, which heralds a time of fresh starts and is advantageous for new undertakings.   This months New Moon, which occurs on 21 August, is in the outgoing and outspoken sign of Leo!   As we go from the Full Moon in Aquarius to the New Moon in this Fire sign ruled by the Sun, we have a beneficial period for taking our inventive thoughts and plans and putting them into action for further self expression. With the New Moon in Leo we now can take a break from the home/family ties of Cancer and move wholeheartedly into the Leo energy.   This Fire sign brings with it a period of more   self-orientation, attention-getting, creativity and joyfulness in our expression – rather than the moody orientation of Cancer. This is a favorable time for beginning activities regarding areas of the heart, creativity, generosity of spirit and warm-hearted self-expression.

Venus into Cancer on 1 August

August begins with Venus, the planet of love and creative expression, moving into the the sensitive and self-protective sign of Cancer on 1 August.   This pairing brings with it a gentle, receptive and instinctive energy – with much sentimentality and family orientation. During this time we may find ourselves needing more security in our lives – perhaps security based on our possessions, as well as experiencing a stronger home-life focus.   Our orientation at this time may be toward redecorating our domains, entertaining our entourage, or having family issues occupy our time. We may express greater maternal feelings for others now as we are more eager to nurture and care for loved ones – just make sure it does not become overbearing or smothering when attempting to “assist” others. This is a great time for housewarmings, family gatherings, or cooking up a storm – just be careful of overindulgence as food may be seen as a form of comfort or self-nurturing, and   digestion issues may prove to be a bit more sensitive during this phase.   Another thing to reflect on during this time is self-nurturing.   If you have been the one giving constant consideration to others, think strongly now about what you need to do to bring more care and attention to yourself going forward.

Mercury into Virgo on 3 August

Mercury, the planet of communications, moves into the detailed and organized Earth-sign of Virgo on 3 August.   Mercury rules Virgo, meaning the nature of the sign is especially attuned to the planet.   When a planet is “in residence” in a sign it rules the planet expresses in a particularly direct manner.   This Mercury-Virgo team will help our thoughts be more logical and analytical and get us into a more punctual, precise (and perhaps nit-picky) orientation.   This is a great time to incorporate more order in our lives - be it with our health, our finances, our work, or in our home.   This is a favorable time to revisit the bottom line, weed out what is no longer useful, get more practical in our daily doings, and be more discriminatory about how we spend our time and money.   The Virgo sign is analogous to a file clerk – and so this is a beneficial period for getting our files and paperwork (as well as our closets) in order, and certainly a productive time for bookkeeping matters.   As this sixth sign of the Zodiac is also strongly aligned with being of help or of service to others we may find ourselves wanting to assist those around us in some way or lend a hand to a worthwhile cause.   Be careful during this transit of being overly meticulous in your efforts, wanting to be “helpful” but instead coming across as too critical, and striving toward a goal of “perfection” that obviously does not exist.

Sun into Virgo on 23 August

The Sun, representing our personal power and vitality joins Mercury in the well-composed and politely-mannered sign of Virgo on 23 August.   This Sun-Virgo alignment indicates a favorable time for getting our lives, our health and our daily chores more organized, with a stronger focus toward arranging our time and our energies to maximize our efforts.   This is a great time for weeding out, sorting through or dealing with the time-consuming details that once may have seemed daunting.   If there has been some paper work, bookkeeping, fine print or editing work that has been on the bottom of your to-do list, this is a time to get it done!   As one Solar cycle ends (the Sun previously in outgoing Leo) and another begins (the reserved energy of Virgo now coming forth) we have a once-a-year opportunity to assimilate new information, organize our lives and affairs more conscientiously, and deal with facts more realistically. This Sun/Mercury/Virgo emphasis helps us strive for more precision in our multi-tasking abilities, and so while balancing our books we can also balance matters pertaining to our health and diet too.   As Virgo also relates to health, this is an advantageous time to try new holistic measures for streamlining our health concerns and for eliminating what is not healthy (physically, emotionally or mentally) in our lives.   The Virgo Earth energy also likes to be useful, feel needed, and lend a helping hand – so this is also a period when you may find yourself wanting to contribute your time or attention to something you find meaningful.   Caution during this period as there may be a tendency toward being overly critical, too worried about material issues, more fault-finding than usual, or experiencing nervous tension – especially when it comes to wanting to get everything perfect – perfection can not be accomplished in this lifetime!

Mars into Cancer on 26 August

Mars, the planet representing our survival instincts, competitive edge and the initiative we take in life moves into the sensitive and nurturing sign of Cancer on 26 August. This placement occurs approximately once every two years and can indicate a time when we may become overly sensitive, overly emotional and even more family orientated.   During this alignment we can see more of our energies directed toward home-life, domestic issues, and household dealings and this is a great time to undertake any DYI home improvement project that you have been meaning to get to.   As our actions are directed toward a greater desire for domestic and emotional security during this period, and we have an opportunity to provide even more emotional nourishment for others at this time.   Matters regarding family protection, child care, and real estate issues will be highlighted.   Although this Mars-Cancer pairing is not outwardly aggressive, beware of holding things in or repressing your emotions. Positively, this is a time when you can assert yourself though your feelings – but make sure they honest and not sublimated.   During this cycle we should beware of resentments, ego/anger issues that can brew up within the home, and caution too about being too demanding or smothering with those we love.   We may also find ourselves reminiscing of “better times” and getting too lost in memories of the past now, but reflecting on what was is a good way to plan for what can be in the future.   As Venus is also transiting in the sign of Cancer during this juncture, caution once more is needed when it comes to food and digestion issues – and with Mars in Cancer stomach problems can be strongly affected by the feelings and moods of others or difficult family interactions.

Mercury into Libra on 26 August

The networking planet of Mercury hooks up with the relationship-oriented sign of Libra on 26 August, bringing stronger emphasis to our seeking-out and reaching-out to others.   We are more “other” focused now, with a need to join up with like-minded individuals in order to share creative and intellectual pursuits.   As Mercury, ruling our communications and our self expression, moves from the Virgo sign of introspection to the Libra vibe of connection with others we find ourselves shifting from critical focus to a desire to have more satisfying relationships in our lives.   This time highlights learning, teaching, writing, and interaction with others with an eye to new interests and knowledge.   This is also a period where we strive for a more creative balance within ourselves and in our dealings with those around us.   This is an advantageous period for considering relationships as well – the one we have with others as well as with ourselves, along with the relationship we have with the   earth and the natural beauty our environment provides us with.   Beware of the slight downfalls of this pairing which is a tendency to be a bit indecisive or having vacillating interests, as well as having an excess “fussiness” when it comes to symmetry as our aesthetic senses are more heightened at this time.

Venus into Leo on 27 August

As we wind up the month of August we find Venus - the planet of charm, attractiveness and appreciation of beauty - moving out of the diminutive and domestic-oriented sign of Cancer into the more gregarious and self-centered sign of Leo on 27 August.   The Venus/Leo energy dramatizes emotional and creative expression in our lives – now we have an opportunity to show off our selves, our possessions, our talents and our passions during this cycle.   All things regarding beauty, creativity, drama, and generous feelings are heightened during this transit, and we are able to bring forth a more warm-hearted and affectionate side of our nature.   There will be more emphasis on beautification, adornment, decoration, style, and bolder creative expression featured in our lives. We may be more self-aware of our appearances, of how we show off ourselves more to the world - and because of this we can take on a more confident approach in our dealings with others.   Beware of impulse buying at this time as we may find ourselves evaluating our self worth by what we own – and feeling that the more possessions we have the more positive we feel about ourselves.   Remember the most beautiful treasure that we possess is our own inner light – and this is a time to let it shine!

Coming up soon: Pluto direct on 12 September in Capricorn...

Now that Pluto, the planet ruling large organizations, political movements, and transformation of all kinds is approaching the end of its retrograde cycle, it's time to consider how this may impact the economy.   Pluto's move into Capricorn coincided with the start of the current round of financial restructuring, and the economic outlook has tended to follow Pluto's lead.   Back in April, when Pluto turned retrograde, some of the “gloom and doom” people were feeling about economic matters started to dissipate.  At this point we're seeing more optimistic outlooks regarding the stock markets, currency exchanges, investments and the housing market.   But as Pluto is now set to switch “forward” again in its direct movement through conservative (and karmic) Capricorn on 12 September, this may change.

Events in August should give us clues as to what's coming up economically.   In particular, there are two times this month worth keeping an eye on: 2 August, when the planet of values and possessions Venus opposes Pluto, and 27 August, when Mars, planet of action and assertion, does the same.   If these two dates pass without any challenging news we can feel better about the upcoming Pluto direct time – but if there are difficulties in August, we may find a greater time of testing for the world economy starting in September.

Happy August and Keep Looking Up!

JULY 2009 Astrological Forecast

By GiGi Sosnoski

This month we get to experience the intensity of Solar and Lunar Eclipses stirring up the home front of Cancer, along with sex planets Venus and Mars moving into flirtatious Gemini! The Sun, currently residing in the introspective and sensitive sign of Cancer, morphs into a more extroverted and aggressive Leo vibe at the end of this month - helping us to feel more confident and assertive when dealing with matters of importance. Those are just some of July's highlights, but now more of the fun details:

The Lunar Cycle for July - The New and Full Moons:

Astrologically, the Moon relates to your home and domestic situation, protective urges, and all that nurtures and provides sustenance for us.   The Moon rules the emotional sign of Cancer, and so they share many of the same associations.   Since the Sun will be in the sign of Cancer for a good part of July, thus having a close affinity with the Moon, this is a good opportunity for me to give a bit more insight into the wondrous and ever-changing Lunar energy.

The Moon in your personal chart can reveal your innermost needs, your secret dreams, and how you instinctively react and respond to problems.   Be it the sizzling roast in the oven or the hand-made wreath on the door, the Moon energy and its sign position can show how we feel toward domestic and family life.   It also gives further insight into what “food” we need for our emotional, mental and spiritual nourishment, as well as our diet and eating habits.

Each month (“Moonth”) the Moon goes through a complete cycle of the signs, staying in each sign for a little over two days.   We all respond to a greater or lessor degree when the Moon changes signs, but we react to the Moon especially strongly at the time of a New Moon (when the Moon aligns with the Sun) or a Full Moon (when the Moon is opposite the Sun).   These major Lunar events set the “tone” for each month - giving us an idea of how we may experience life in the weeks ahead. This cycle of the Moon in relation to the Sun is one of the most basic influences of our lives!

This month's lunar cycle is going to be more intense than usual in that we will be experiencing two eclipses this month – a Solar and a Lunar.   Eclipses occur when the Sun and the Moon align together, or oppose each other, at the same time as the Moon is crossing the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun.   A Lunar Eclipse occurs at the time of the Full Moon, when the Moon is opposite the Sun, and a Solar Eclipse occurs at the time of the New Moon, when the Moon comes together with the Sun.   Either type of eclipse marks a kind of jolt to our Astrological chart (and ourselves!), when a supercharged burst of energy is poured into one point and then shakes up everything in contact with that point!   Depending on how closely the eclipse aligns with the positions of the planets in each of our Astrology charts, it may have more or less impact on our lives.   Do you know where the eclipses will fall in your chart this month??

We enter into July still holding on to the domestic-oriented and nurturing energies of the New Moon in Cancer last month, which occurred on 23 June.   This intuitive Water sign starts our month on a emotionally responsive, caring, moody, and possessive note, leading up to the Full Moon in the serious and ambitious sign of Capricorn on 7 July.   This Full Moon is also a Lunar Eclipse, and will be occurring in the Saturn-ruled Earth sign of pragmatic Capricorn, which brings a more controlled and pessimistic view of ourselves and our surroundings (especially including our family and home life, coming off the New Moon in Cancer).   This is a time when we feel a greater need to get things accomplished, put our business in order, get organized in terms of our security needs, and be more serious regarding our future directions. During this period our feelings may become more sober, practical, diligent and perhaps somewhat apprehensive in nature.

As this July Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse reinforces transformational Pluto, also in the conservative and austere sign of Capricorn, we may find ourselves becoming more pragmatic in our approach to emotional situations, with a need to take greater control of our feelings, environments and family matters. This may indicate a time when we can also be too hard on ourselves (or others), and have a tendency to view the road ahead with more reserve or caution than truly necessary.   This Lunar event will intensify the feelings we experience, and as it occurs in the serious sign of Capricorn, we should guard against the tendency to go overboard with worry or concern or be too pessimistic in our thoughts at this time.   It may be a time when the financial markets retreat from the optimism of the last few months, and perhaps overreact to the realization that there's still a while to go before good times return.

The Full Moon corresponds to a time of culmination, when our plans can hopefully be brought to fruition. This energy is then carried through to the New Moon, which signals a time of new beginnings and is a favorable period for starting projects and embarking on new endeavors.   This months New Moon,   which occurs on the 22 July is again in the sign of Cancer – the second in a row which is highly unusual! This may indicate the start of even more long-term trends and undertakings regarding all domestic issues.   Areas revolving around family, households, real estate as well as our emotional sustenance, comfort and security will be a stronger focus for us.

This New Moon on 22 July in the nurturing Water-sign of Cancer will be a bit of a repeat in feeling from the one we experienced in June, but since this is also a Solar Eclipse, the emotional nature of the Cancer energy will be even more intensified! This makes for an advantageous time to concentrate on situations you wish to manifest in your life, bringing further emphasis to family, nurturing issues, and all domestic matters.   We may also find that our intuitive energies are stronger, providing a period of more meditative, introspective and psychic attunement when it comes to areas of emotional security in our lives. Memories and attachments to the past may feature more during this period, along with a greater ability to get in touch with the feelings and moods of others. This is a beneficial time to work on home/life matters - perhaps coming together with family in a renewed sense of commitment, letting go of past hurts or mending old wounds, and taking greater care and delight regarding those in our lives.

Uranus goes Retrograde in Pisces on 1 July:

Uranus, the outer planet ruling technology, innovation, and discovery as well as unexpected reversals and rebellious urges for freedom, turns retrograde, or “moves backward” in the intuitive and sensitive Water sign of Pisces on 1 July.   This is the start of a five month period where we may find ourselves looking for more progressive answers and insights within ourselves rather than from the outer world.   This may be a period where we can readdress and review any reversals or setbacks that have occurred for us since last year, and perhaps see things in a more detached, less emotional way.   Positively this can be a time when we strive to free ourselves from past issues, preconceived ideas and theology, and search for a deeper truth within ourselves.   But as Uranus is retrograde in this sensitive sign of Pisces, we need to be aware that quick fixes will not help solve long-term problems.   Being more conscious of our intuitive strengths, and having more sensitive awareness to the unique energies that are within us can bring more insight into the proper directions to take at this time.

Mercury into Cancer on 4 July:

In Roman mythology, Mercury was known as the “Messenger God” and was associated with communication, travel and information. As the planet Mercury moves out of the thinking sign of Gemini and into the feeling sign of Cancer on 4 July, we may experience a shift in our perceptions.   This is an good time for more intuitive thinking, more instinctive response, as well as have yet further concern for our family, home and domestic issues – which are all ruled by Cancer.   Mercury will be residing in this position for the next two weeks, marking a time when we may connect more to our nurturing side, and have a better ability to reach out to others in a family sense.   This is a positive time for gathering together with those close to our heart, perhaps over a hearty pot of soup, and reflecting on the warmth and feeling of all things surrounding us.   It is an beneficial time for sharing your emotions with others, as well as honoring family and the bonds we have to each other. This Mercury/Cancer pairing can also signal a time when our attention is taken up with home improvement ideas and household chores, and marks a beneficial time for discussing sensitive issues with those close to us.   Although the touchy-feely Cancer energy may make us a bit more prone to moodiness, melancholy and emotionalism now, this period is advantageous for reflection on our feelings, and where family, food, nostalgic memories, and communal issues become the themes in our lives.

Venus into Gemini on 5 July:

When the “Goddess of Love” planet moves into the witty Air sign of Gemini on 5 July, we become a bit more fickle and flirtatious regarding matters of the heart.   Moving forward from the earthy mode of last month's Venus in Taurus to the more dualistic expression of Gemini, we see the Venus energy going from physical to intellectual.   The fun and excitement of romance, clever company and chatty companionship is what we seek now - rather than commitment and obligations.   This restless period highlights a time when we are more social, wanting to share in like-minded stimulation with others, and more curious and creative in our imaginations.   With the affectionate planet Venus paired with the curious and thinking Gemini energy, we can become more interested in a variety of subjects and ideas, wanting to share in discussions, and have more fun and laughter in our interactions.   But as we flit from one topic or social situation to another, keep in mind that our attention spans are very short at this time – and what we find of interest now may not be as exciting to us next month.

Jupiter conjunct Neptune on 10 July (both retrograde this time!):

When the expansive planet Jupiter aligns with the imaginative planet Neptune, we may find that we give more credence to our dreams and visions.   These two outer planets will form a conjunction, or a “coming together” in the sign of Aquarius again on 10 July, but now both retrograde - or “backward” in their direction and feeling. This may be a time when we dream about a more idealistic future and perhaps get carried away in the fantasy of what could be. We may be more drawn to the spiritual and philosophical, while becoming more compassionate and sympathetic toward others – but we need to be aware of being misled or an easy target for those preaching the “truth” about things now, for in fact it can be anything but. This may be a highly creative time, especially for the artist within us, where colors seem more vibrant, music seems more ethereal and the feelings evoked from expressive creations can be inspiring.   But there can be a tendency to get a bit removed from the practicalities and realities that also need to be dealt with at this time. This pairing of planets, especially retrograde, brings a strong risk of not seeing things clearly or choosing fantasy over the facts.   During this alignment our sense of reality can be distorted - and as our imagination expands our awareness of what is real declines. The combination of Jupiter and Neptune likes to live the beautiful dream, and dislikes dealing with the unattractive details of the everyday life. During this time be aware of interpreting situations incorrectly – perhaps thinking that financial difficulties are now resolved - as this may not entirely be correct and we may be overlooking important details. This is not the most auspicious time to make major investments, speculate or take the jump into a more “perfect” future.   This is a time when we can tap into a more introspective, meditative, intuitive or creative side of our psyches – perhaps finding spiritual inspiration in our dreams for a more ebullient tomorrow – just remember to temper these aspirations with a reality check.

Mars goes into Gemini on 12 July:

Mars, the planet associated with the God of War, represents traits such as assertiveness and aggression as well as the ability to be courageous, forceful, and warrior-like.   Mars can also be associated with our willfulness, energetic expression, sexuality and competitive nature. When Mars moves from the Earthy sign of Taurus into the more verbal and expressive Gemini energy on 12 July, we have an opportunity to experience and express different aspects of our will or energies.   For the next six weeks it may be hard to to stay focused as we find ourselves busy networking, thinking and expressing our desires, joining up with like-minded associates and juggling many projects - all the while being more social, witty and flirtatious!   This is an excellent time to get caught up with a lot of “busy work” - correspondence, emails, phone calls and meetings – while being able to multi-task and express our grievances.   As such, this may be a time when we should be cautious when it comes to argumentative dealings with others as we have a urgency to express our wills and our opinions at the same time!   During Mars in Gemini we strive to break out of our routine by exploring a variety of subjects, meeting new acquaintances and taking up interesting projects that can hold our attention for the present - until something or someone more fascinating peaks our curiosity or desires!

Mercury goes into Leo on 18 July:

Our first planet in our solar system, Mercury, representing information, travel, self expression and communication, leaves the home-bound sensitive sign of Cancer on 18 July and moves into the outgoing and dramatic Fire sign of Leo.   Now our thinking and our reasoning ability becomes more outwardly focused, and we move from being more self-protective to more overt in our interactions with others. Our communications are now more confident, self assured and grand, and conversations in general will be more expressive, theatrical and assertive.   The focus for many of us now will be “the big picture” – and the more expansive and grand the better! When Mercury is in Leo, the details of daily life may not be as important as the end goal, but keep in mind that the mundane considerations also need to be seen to in order to make our great schemes successful. This is an advantageous time for presentations, speech-making, writing, or saying whats on our mind!   But also know that during this Mercury/Leo pairing we may not be as attentive listeners as we usually are as we are more eager to express ourselves to others!

Sun goes into Leo on 23 July:

The Sun moves into the fiery and extroverted sign of Leo on 23 rd July.   The move from the more internalized sign of Cancer into the more externalized force of Leo may be be felt in many of the things we do now.   The basic function of the Sun's position in our charts, or currently in the heavens above us, is to indicate where we can best utilize our energies, best express our unique talents and where we can really “shine” in our lives! This can give us   insight into how we can may act, make decisions, direct our abilities and express our true natures.   With the Sun now moving into the assertive sign of Leo we exert a more playful, proud, outgoing energy – wanting to express our individuality and stand out more from the crowd. This is a great time to add more confidence, creativity, flair, drama and expression to our lives.   There is a greater need for attention, enjoyment, grandness, theatre, and showing a more outgoing attitude in our daily work and dealings. This is a advantageous period to showcase your talents, let others know who you are in your own right, entertain, show off, be generous and experience more joie de vivre in our lives!

Happy July and Keep Looking Up!

June 2009 Astrological Forecast
By GiGi Sosnoski

In June we finally see Mercury turning direct in its motion, after three weeks of dealing with typical Mercury retrograde (“backward”) manifestations: miscommunications, delays, break-downs, and plans not going according to our wishes. The Sun, traveling into the nurturing sign of Cancer later this month, indicates a time of more sensitive expression and focus on home and family matters for us all.  With Mercury and Venus proceeding into the earthy and sensuous sign of Taurus, more thought and attention regarding our financial situations, creative endeavors and stability issues will also be featured. That's a brief summary, now on to the details.....

The Lunar Cycle for June:  The New and Full Moon

We come into June still holding on to the social and dualistic feel of the New Moon in Gemini which occurred on 25 May.  This Air sign energy operates as restless, chatty, multi-tasking and sometimes indecisive (especially with Mercury, the ruler of Gemini, retrograde through most of May!). The Full Moon on 8 June, in the Jupiter-ruled Fire sign of Sagittarius, corresponds to a time of  culmination, when our plans from the Gemini New Moon can hopefully be brought to fruition. The time from the Full Moon to the next New Moon, in this case on 23 June, is then a period of wrapping up and winding down in preparation for the start of the next cycle.

The nurturing Water-sign energy of the New Moon in Cancer, occurring on 23 June, signals new beginnings and is a favorable time for starting projects, especially if it has to do with family, domestic issues, or real estate.  There will be a stronger pull now toward care and attention to our households, comfort, and security, - as well as to loved ones.  This is a beneficial period to let go of past hurts, mend old wounds with those we care about, and take more delight in what our kinfolk represent in our lives. As the Cancer sign has a close affinity to food, this can also be a favorable time for restaurants, catering, cooking classes, etc. Activities of this type begun at the time of the New Moon should come to some sort of resolution or visible progress by the time of next month's Full Moon in Capricorn, occurring on July 7.

Mercury Direct in Taurus – 31 May

The planet Mercury, ruler of the sign Gemini, was known as the Messenger God in Roman mythology and corresponds with all things regarding communications, travel and information.  When it moves retrograde or backwards in its motion (as it does about every four months), there is greater potential for mishaps, delays and a lovely variety of communication breakdowns.  We experienced this kind of Mercury retrograde energy in May, but now that the planet of verbal and mental expression has finally gone “direct” (on 31 May), we can also start moving forward.  The first part of June with Mercury in the Earth sign of Taurus heralds an advantageous time for putting our plans (that may have met with resistance last month) into activation and implementing new endeavors.

Venus into Taurus – 6 June

Venus is the Roman name for the Greek goddess Aphrodite – the Goddess of Love!  As such, Venus is the planet ruling all things pertaining to relationships, love, creativity and what we value.  Venus transiting from the aggressive Fire energy of Aries into the more affectionate Earth sign of Taurus on 6 June brings greater attention to the physical, artistic and romantic expression in our lives.  For the next four weeks, Venus in Taurus will bring more focus and consideration to what we value – emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually.  Venus in its ruling sign of Taurus craves beauty along with security, so this highlights a period where we are carefully pondering our affections, our possessions, and what we need to feel more secure in both our personal and monetary relationships. Although this may be a time when we are a bit slower in pursuing new relationships or financial endeavors, there is a persistence and a stubbornness that goes along with this Taurus energy, and once a decision is made it is done so with greater commitment.   This is a lovely time to appreciate what we have, treasure those we are with, and cultivate more beauty and artistry in our lives.  Enjoyment of all things comforting, creative and loving is a wonderful manifestation of this Goddess/Earth coupling!

Mercury into Gemini on 14 June

With Mercury now happily moving forward from Taurus into Gemini, we go from a conservative way of thinking to a more flirtatious and curious way of expression.  For the next three weeks, Mercury will be in its ruling sign of Gemini, (returning here after its retrograde bout), so this emphasizes a beneficial period when it comes to all communications, socializing, contract negotiation, travel, new learning, favorable agreements and the ability to multi-task on many projects! During this time we can take on new activities of these types with great enthusiasm – we just have to make sure we have the same gusto to see them through.  This Mercury-Gemini pairing gives us all more versatility and inventiveness when it comes to information and exchange of knowledge.  This is a time of enjoying much conversation and witty exchanges and wordy interactions – although perhaps without the greatest of attention spans.

Jupiter Retrograde in Aquarius on 15 June

Jupiter, the largest planet of our solar system, represents all areas of expansion in our lives. Benevolent Jupiter brings an optimistic feel to whatever it touches, and in the sign of Aquarius there is an increase in our liberal philosophy of life, perhaps blending a more humanitarian and philanthropic outlook into our daily endeavors.  With Jupiter in this Air sign until next year, we have the opportunity to be more aware of the positive changes that we can manifest in our own lives while also being cognizant of the suffering of others. But as Jupiter turns retrograde on 15 June, this “reverse” motion can cause a stalemate or rehashing of some of these areas of our lives.  Positively, this can give us an opportunity to go back and readdress some of our old philosophies, belief systems and outlooks on life – perhaps giving us an advantageous window for revisiting some religious, spiritual or educational concerns that we have been wrestling with.  Negatively, as the planet Jupiter also rules all things pertaining to foreign matters, higher education, publishing, immigration and long distance travel, during this retrograde period  we may find delays, restructuring or redefining occurring in these areas.

Sun into Cancer on 21 June – Summer Solstice in the Northern and Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemispheres!

Cancer, one of the most sensitive signs of the Zodiac, is the abode of the Sun between the approximate dates of June 21 and July 23rd.  Those born during these dates reside under the sign of “The Crab”, the first sign of the Water Triplicity and the fourth sign of the Zodiac, which is very much concerned with nurturing and family.  When the Sun moves into this home-oriented sign we all have a greater need to focus more care and attention toward household comfort and security issues, and may find ourselves more concerned with the protection and care of loved ones.

On 21 June when the Sun moves into Cancer, this signals the first day of summer for the Northern Hemisphere, and the first day of winter in the Southern.  The first experiences the longest day of the year and the latter the shortest.  This is the Solstice, where the sun reaches the outer limits of its movement in the sky and appears to “stay awhile” before it starts its journey to the other extreme. Wherever we may reside, this marks a turning point in the cycle of the year and of our lives, filled with new beginnings and expectations for the season ahead. Here in the Southern Hemisphere we miss out on the traditional Winter Solstice celebration (in modern times celebrated as Christmas), but even though there's no official holiday to mark the time we can still celebrate with our family and friends that the shortest day of the year is past and the days are again getting longer.

Happy June and Keep Looking Up!

Keep Looking Up!

May 2009 Astrological Forecast
By GiGi Sosnoski

This month we see an interesting pairing between the energies of conservative and thoughtful Taurus and chatty and flirtatious Gemini when it comes to the planetary movements.  Our energies turn from a more practical approach to a more expressive energy with the Sun going from Taurus to Gemini, and Mercury's retrograde dance between the signs of Gemini and Taurus also signal a time of working with the dual energies of caution and impulsive expression. A look at some of the energies this month can give us a better understanding of what we may experience when it comes to our lives and our interactions with others. We'll start with the Mercury retrograde cycle, then take a look at the other major events of the month.

Mercury Retrograde – 7 May to 31 May
Mercury, known as the Messenger God in Roman mythology, rules all things pertaining to communication, transportation, and information.  This  planet is what we look to in our Astrology charts to understand how we can best express ourselves and how we can better utilize our intellect and mental abilities. Mercury's current movement in our solar system is in the witty sign of Gemini, and will be turning retrograde in this Sign of the Twins on 7 May.  Retrograde is the term used to describe a planet that appears to be moving backwards from the perspective of the Earth.  In Astrological terms a retrograde planet works contrary to its normal expression, and in the case of Mercury this difference is often very apparent.
When Mercury turns retrograde there is a greater potential for communication breakdowns, short-distance transportation disruptions, and generally all kinds of everyday plans going awry.  With Mercury in Gemini, a sign where Mercury is normally very much “at home”, this Mercury retrograde may be even more disruptive than usual.  Expect miscommunications, mechanical malfunctions, travel delays, derailments in negotiations, and an increased incidence of mistakes, confusion and stress!  Mercury retrograde is generally not a time to sign any contracts, schedule major negotiations, start a new job, or begin a new project, as it may not end up in the way that you planned. But Mercury Retrograde is a favorable time for planning and organizing and getting things arranged and ready to begin anew once Mercury has returned to its direct motion. The best use of this period is to stay flexible and regroup, rethink, and reconsider matters, and make plans to move forward when Mercury finally does at the end of the month.
Mercury moves “backward” from the mentally oriented sign of Gemini into the more practical sign of Taurus on 14 May, which may bring a change in how the retrograde effects us. Taurus deals with money, security, and possessions, so be especially careful when it comes to agreements relating to these areas until the end of the month. Mercury ends its retrograde on 31 May, still in Taurus, so we'll be entering June ready to again move forward on our plans and activities.

New Moon in Taurus – 25 April
The Taurus New Moon at the end of April helps lead us into the month of May with a more purposeful and pragmatic feeling when it comes to issues of stability in our lives.  Leading up to the Full Moon on the 9th, we have an opportunity to manifest more security when it comes to our home life and issues of finance. We go into May with a sense of practicality and persevering energy, and so we can continue to use this energy to put into place a more grounded appraisal of our future plans when it comes to our financial and emotional security.

Full Moon in Scorpio – 9 May
A Full Moon is a time of culmination – where our hopes, wishes and the work begun during the New Moon can come to fruition. The promises and energies put into action during April's New Moon in Taurus may now come to pass, accentuated by the energy of the Full Moon in Scorpio on 9 May.  This may be an emotional time for individuals and relationships as the pairing of a Taurus/Scorpio energy resonates the need for harmony in what is mine (Taurus) versus what is yours (Scorpio). Taurus deals with our possessions, emotional and material security, and what we need to feel grounded, whereas Scorpio emphasizes the transformational issues, the need to destroy in order to create, and what we can share on deeper levels.  Taurus wants to enjoy the pleasures of life, to taste and admire all the beauty that surrounds us, where the Scorpio essence wants to dig deeper into our dark psychological issues and the mysteries of life.  So during this Scorpio Full Moon on 9 May, originating from the New Moon in Taurus, we can ideally find a balance between these two energies – perhaps understanding what we need to express regarding our emotional and psychological issues and finding illumination between how we deal with issues of gathering and giving.

Saturn Direct in Virgo – 17 May
Saturn, the planet representing our responsibilities and the accomplishment that can be gained from hard work, comes out of it's yearly retrograde period (which began on the first day of the year) and turns direct on 17 May.  In the sign of Virgo, this planet of serious and dutiful doings signals another round of accountability and diligence with regard to our actions.  We now take on a more sober realization of our obligations in life and a further awareness of what serious effort and purposeful action we need to put forward in order to accomplish our ambitions. This is a time that we can move ahead in our endeavors if we pursue our agendas with greater patience and practicality.  When Saturn was retrograde we may have had difficulty realizing many of our hard-earned dreams, where limitations were evident and the daily routine did not seem to produce results despite our best efforts. Now with Saturn in Virgo direct we may see our efforts start to move forward again, especially in the area of work, health, daily routines and service to others.

Sun into Gemini – 21 May
When the Sun moves into the Air Sign of Gemini on 21 May we go from the practical and stable Taurus approach to life to a more verbal and witty form of expression with Gemini.  The Sun represents our vitality and creative life force, so when it moves into the intellectual sign of Gemini we have an innate desire to communicate and verbalize our thoughts and ideas.  But as Mercury is still retrograde at this time, and Mercury is the ruler of Gemini, we may not be clear at first in how we are communicating or how we are getting our point across.  Until Mercury goes direct at the end of May it's best to focus on planning and organizing our ideas. Then with the Sun still in Gemini as we enter June, it will be an advantageous time to put forth our thoughts in the form of writing, teaching, learning, speaking, thinking, moving and questioning.  The Gemini energy is one that we can utilize to be very expressive, charming, bright and witty – but it is a restless time and one that can bring about change when it comes to agreements and our interactions with others.

New Moon in Gemini – 25 May
With a New Moon we have an opportunity to initiate and begin our hopes and plans for the weeks ahead with a clearer understanding of our emotional needs.  The New Moon in May in the sign of Gemini on the 25th highlights a time of more self-expression, intuitive interactions and the flow of information.  This New Moon expresses the Gemini energy along with the Sun and Mercury and so an emphasis of the Air sign is apparent in the way we feel and express ourselves.  This is a time when our minds and nervous systems may be speeded up and in our haste to express our feelings we may not take time to think before we speak.  This may be a period when we are taking in a lot of different ideas and information, but need to assess many parts of what we receive with a more well-thought-out and practical eye so that we can manifest our plans by the Full Moon in optimistic Sagittarius in mid-June.

Jupiter Conjunct Neptune in Aquarius – 28 May
When the expansive planet Jupiter aligns with the imaginative planet Neptune on 28 May, we may find that we give more credence to our dreams and visions. This is a highly creative time for those in the Arts where colors seem more vibrant, music seems more ethereal and the feelings evoked from expressive creations can be inspiring. But with this pairing of planets also comes a strong risk of not seeing things clearly.  During this alignment our sense of reality can be distorted and as our imagination expands our awareness of what is real declines. Our lives may feel too mundane or no longer adequate to suit us during this time, so we may create a more elaborate world vision of what we perceive to be a “better” place.  The combination of Jupiter and Neptune likes to live in the dream, but doesn't like to deal with the gross details of the here and now or the hardships of everyday life. It is so much more exciting and magical to just make up something better!  We may find that we are interpreting situations incorrectly – perhaps thinking that financial difficulties are now resolved and situations turning in our favor, but this may not entirely be the fact.  This is not a time to make major investments, speculate or opt to jump into a more “perfect” future – it is wise to wait and put these actions into place after this alignment passes and when better clarity can prevail. This is a beneficial time for tapping into our creative muse, seeking spiritual inspiration and finding joy in our dreams for a better tomorrow – just temper these aspirations with a reality check.

Neptune Retrograde in Aquarius – 29 May
Neptune, the planet representing our intuitive flow, compassionate energies and escapist tendencies begins it's yearly retrograde period in the humanitarian sign of Aquarius on 29th May.  This can be an opportunity to reconnect with our more intuitive imaginations and gain inspiration from our visions and dreams.  But as it is a retrograde period we can reflect more on our inner awareness of what we can do for better spiritual expression in our lives and how we can perhaps find greater meaning in our imagery of what we want to create in our world to bring ourselves and others greater fulfillment. This is a good time for more introspective questioning and deeper contemplation, perhaps realizing what areas we have not looked at practically or situations where we may have been deluding ourselves.  This is a beneficial time for keeping our feet on the ground while keeping our dreams in sight.

Keep Looking Up!

April 2009 Astrological Forecast
By GiGi Sosnoski

April brings a strong focus on the fiery sign of Aries and the down-to-earth sign of Taurus.  These two signs always make an interesting combination, with Aries needing to get things started and push ahead and Taurus needing to maintain a level of dependability, stability and comfort.  Here's a brief overview of some of the Astrological events for the month to help you tune into the energies and make better use of them in your own life!

Venus through April
Venus, the Goddess of Love planet, is doing a complicated dance in April.  Rather than listing all her moves individually I'll just cover the whole performance here.
At the start of April, Venus is retrograde (moving backward, as seen from Earth) in the aggressive sign of Aries.  When a planet goes retrograde its feeling and influence can be more subtle or intuitive, and it can also bring up issues from the past.  During a Venus retrograde period we can meet up with past loves, contact old friends, and resume artistic endeavors we'd started and then abandoned.  We may find ourselves dealing with past debts or bygone issues of finance, since Venus also rules these areas.  With Venus retrograde in Aries we may find our self esteem is a bit low, or that business is a bit slow, or that we are wanting to rein in the spending more.  But issues arising now that make us feel uneasy, unloved or unfulfilled can be addressed.  This can be a time to tap into our true power, to learn what we need to do to value ourselves and utilize our impulses more constructively.

Venus retreats back into Pisces on 12 April.  Venus, ruling beauty and relationships, paired with the delicate and sensitive sign of Pisces encourages us to reflect on our past romances and artistic activities.  We may also look back on the romance that was there when we began our current relationship but may have been lost over time.  This is an opportunity to appreciate what was, but now also value more of what we currently have.  As Venus turns direct on 18 April we have an opportunity to bring back some of the beauty and romance that we may feel is lacking in our lives.
Finally, Venus moves forward into Aries again on 24 April, right after the God of War planet Mars also enters Aries. Venus in Aries brings impulsiveness and spontaneity to romantic matters (and in spending, so watch out!), and with Mars also in Aries this energy is going to be even more emphasized!  We now have a wonderful opportunity to take constructive action regarding the things we feel strongly about and the passions in our lives.  This is a time when we can share our hearts with others, embark on creative ventures, feel more enlivened by the things that bring us joy, and feel heightened awareness and intensity regarding relationships.  It's a time for taking a look at what we feel intensely about in our lives and what brings us meaning and fulfillment. Just be aware of the downside of the Venus-Aries: being too pushy with your feelings, wanting personal satisfaction right now, or making impulsive purchases of attractive items.

New Moon in Aries – 26 March

We ended the month of March with a New Moon in the warrior sign of Aries on the 26th, which helps to set the tone for the start of April. With the Aries initiative we now have an opportunity to make a fresh start, break from the past and push forward with our dreams.  The Aries energy (“get on with it!”) brings an urgency when it comes to manifesting our personal goals and pursuing more emotional security in our lives. This March New Moon carries these energies into April, continuing to grant us the opportunity to turn a new leaf when it comes to issues we feel strongly about. Hopefully we can see the results of our efforts by the time of the culminating Full Moon in the Air sign of balancing Libra on 10 April.

Pluto Retrograde in Capricorn – 5 April

Pluto, the planet of transformation, ruler of world-wide trends and the influence of the masses, changes to retrograde movement in the Earth sign of Capricorn on 5 April.  This “backwards” motion of the planet in charge of breaking down and rebuilding may be perceived as a reprieve from the current economic situations.  We'll start to feel the worst is over when it comes to financial areas of concern – but this may turn out to be only a brief respite from our monetary woes.  Pluto's retrograde motion over the next few months indicates that the recovery plans currently in place may not work out as expected.  We'll probably see more problems in the financial systems, and a new set of recovery plans, by the time Pluto again goes “forward” in direct motion in mid-September.  Pluto continues its travels through the serious sign of Capricorn for many years to come, providing us with a continual “reality check” and assisting us in becoming more practical and hard working regarding issues of our security.

Mercury into Taurus – 10 April

Mercury, the planet ruling all forms of expression, communication, and transportation moves into the deliberate and dependable sign of Taurus on 10 April.  During this phase we will take more time making up our minds, as the Taurus energy is one that would prefer to ponder a thought rather than jump to conclusions.  At this time we can express ourselves in a more steady, carefully considered way, pacing ourselves in our actions and inter-actions with others.  This is a favorable period for finding down-to-earth ways of solving problems and persevering in a slow and steady manner.  Mercury in Taurus also gives us a better ability to gain knowledge from every day experiences rather than through traditional learning.  Our minds will be also focused more on issues of security and material gains, as well as enjoying the natural beauty around us and our possessions.  Mercury coupled with a Taurus energy is an interesting pairing as Mercury can be a bit changeable, elusive or flighty in its nature (i.e. Mercurial) and Taurus wants to feel grounded, steady and solid.  We need to be aware of becoming “stuck” on a thought, having mental inertia, and becoming stubborn in our perceptions.

Full Moon in Libra – 10 April

This Full Moon in Libra (opposite the Sun in Aries) indicates a time of manifestation and perhaps culmination of some of the seeds that were sown beginning on the New Moon.  Perhaps our passionate feeling and aggressive approach to our life goals during the New Moon phase in March is now manifesting in a more balanced understanding of what we really require for our emotional security. This Libra energy of cooperation and diplomacy  helps us to become aware of what we need to bring more harmony to our relationships as well as to ourselves.  This time of “our needs vs. their needs” gives us an opportunity to further understand ourselves in order to better appreciate others.

Sun into Taurus – 20 April

With the Sun moving into the stable and sensual sign of Taurus on 20 April, our focus becomes more steady and determined. This Earth sign assists in bringing more attention to issues regarding our security, finances, and possessions. A Taurus Sun motivates us to feel more receptive and creative - encouraging a more calm, gentle and kinder nature to emerge in our interactions and business deals. Taurus is also very tactile, and enjoys sensory pleasures - so we will have a better opportunity to appreciate and savor the food, wine, artistry and camaraderie surrounding us.  The loyal Taurus energy will also bring a greater determination to our lives, a greater need for putting down our roots and finding stability in our relationships and all enterprises.  This is a time when we can tap into greater strength and work hard to follow through on projects that were begun when the Sun was in impatient Aries last month.

Earth Day – a time of celebration on behalf of our green planet – occurs on 22 April, right after the Sun enters Taurus each year.  The Sun in the earthy, nature-loving, sign of Taurus perfectly fits this day devoted to appreciation of our wonderful home planet.  On this Earth Day, and this Taurus month ahead, we can consider what further efforts we can make toward greener living – helping our habitat and surroundings to thrive, being more at peace and in balance with our approach to living things and being more aware of our actions.  Take some time to breathe deeply and open your heart to all the natural beauty around you, remembering that who you are is a reflection of your world.

Mars into Aries – 23 April

With the competitive and forceful planet of Mars charging into the active and assertive sign of Aries on 23 April we get a double dose of combative energies.  This can be an excellent time to embark on an active adventure, be direct in your approach with others, take on a new physical regime, think in terms of how you can express yourself in more pioneering ways, and move forward with much courage in all your endeavors.  This is a period where we will find any restrictions difficult to deal with as our need for freedom and self expression and independence is very strong.  Be aware of a greater tendency now toward impulsive action, selfish consideration, being hot tempered or wanting everything your way – now.  This is a time when we can accomplish a great deal and move past any adversity – but it is best to think before doing as our first impulse will be jump in head first!

New Moon in Taurus – 25 April

This New Moon occurring in the grounded Earth sign of Taurus on 25 April helps us move from an aggressive energetic approach of the previous sign Aries, into a more practical, stable, and thoughtful vantage point.  The purposeful sign of Taurus is concerned with issues of stability, growth, putting down roots and being more secure when it comes to issues of finances.  This New Moon brings us an opportunity for putting into place more practical and positive plans regarding issues of growth and prosperity in the weeks to come.

Happy April – and Keep Looking Up!

Keep Looking Up!

March 2009 Astrological Forecast
By GiGi Sosnoski

Pisces, the last position of the Zodiac, is highlighted in many ways during this equinox month.  The sensitive and feeling energy of Pisces makes this a time when we can get more in touch with our inner muse and intuitive flow, so put the time to good use!

New Moon in Pisces

We ended the month of February with a New Moon in Pisces on the 25th, which indicated a time when we had a chance to renew our beliefs and feelings regarding the spiritual or creative energies at work in our lives.  This February New Moon in Pisces, the sign of the Fishes, sets the stage for how we feel going into the first couple of weeks of March, strengthening our intuitive and sympathetic natures and encouraging artistic expression.  We begin this equinox month of March by having an opportunity to revitalize ourselves by using more of our imagination, feeling more compassion, beginning new creative or spiritual endeavors, expressing our romantic natures, or just being more in touch with the universe.  Hopefully we can then see the results of these efforts by the Full Moon in March.

Venus Retrograde

Venus, the planet representing our values, love, and beauty goes retrograde on 7 March.  Most people are aware of the communication turmoil that can be seen during a Mercury retrograde period, but when Venus goes “backwards” in its planetary motion it effects the emotional side of our natures in a similar way.  Venus goes retrograde about one every 18 months, and when it does it brings a period of weeks where we tend to be more introspective, react to situations more emotionally, and may reconsider issues of love and creativity.

Venus will be retrograding in the fiery sign of Aries which usually manifests more affection and passionate eagerness towards others, but during a retro phase there may be changeable feelings in the romantic or creative areas of our lives.  We can find ourselves rushing into matters of the heart, only to have them not work out as first intended.  Aries represents the cardinal expression of the alchemical element of fire, so this retrograde period of Venus in Aries may have a more noticeable effect on those who have this and other cardinal signs prominent in their Astrology charts (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn).

This may be a time where reconsideration of relationships and artistic expression is seen, but there is also an opportunity to gain insight at this time into the areas of affection, creative, financial, and inter-personal relationships that make up our lives.  This can be an advantageous time for gaining better insight and understanding of our feelings of affection and perhaps revisit creative or financial issues that need to be worked on.  Since all retrograde periods tend to deal with issues of the past, this Venus retrograde period may indicate a time when we may be more reminiscent of past loves and we may actually find that those we cared about years ago may resurface now.  Also, this may be a time where we rethink our values and creative endeavors, and indicates a favorable period to take up a project that has been laying dormant.  This may also indicate a period where we are readdressing issues of beauty or attractiveness with ourselves, or with regard to our surroundings.

Although not the best time to begin a new beauty regime or throw an elaborate party,  it is a favorable time to feel what you want to put into place regarding these things when Venus goes direct.  This retrograde period of sensual Venus will last until 18 April, so during this time it is best to curb aggressiveness in the affections for others, watch overindulgence – especially with rich or sweet foods – and resist the urge to spend too much on impulse.  Venus will turn “direct” in her planetary motion on 18 April in the sensitive and gentle sign of Pisces, bringing more artistic endeavors into focus, more intuitive energy into alignment and a deeper sense of understanding and compassion towards others into view.

Mercury into Pisces 9 March

When Mercury, the planet of communications and information, goes into the gentle and highly sensitive sign of Pisces, we can expect a period that bring us all a bit more intuitive understanding, sympathy, spirituality, artistic imagination and even a little shyness when it comes to our expressions.  This is a time when we can better channel our inner poet, painter, photographer or psychic, as our energies turn more imaginative and metaphysical in their universal expression.  But this duo may also indicate a time of feeling less confidence when it comes to heavy intellectual dealings.

During a Mercury Pisces period we prefer to evaluate situations in more intuitive ways, perhaps “feeling” our way though events rather than having an analytical or practical outlook in our evaluation of things.  But this is a favorable and powerful placement of Mercury when it comes to artistic and humanitarian undertakings and  this is a beneficial period for engaging in more intuitive expression and reaching out to those less fortunate in our world.  The Pisces energy wants to help others, to reach out to our “brothers and sisters” and all creatures on this earth as it is a sign that feels we are all “one” with the universe.  Pisces feels things deeply, and are effected greatly by the pain or suffering of others, so this may highlight a time of further empathic and humanitarian endeavors everywhere.

This may also be a time where we can feel overwhelmed by deep emotions, so if you don't already practice meditation Mercury in Pisces is a great time to start. Regular meditation will help create better emotional balance and foster a more spiritual connection to the world, taking the strengths of Mercury in Pisces with us throughout the year.

Full Moon in Virgo 11 March

The Full Moon in the month of March occurs on the 11th and represents a time of healing, being of service to others, and seeking more perfection in our lives.  The Earth sign of Virgo can manifest in a somewhat analytical, critical, discriminating, nit-picky and fussy energy – but is also a wonderful opportunity for the nurse, healer, caretaker, dutiful worker, scientist and technician to emerge from each of us.  With a Full Moon in Virgo our intentions can become more conscientious, organized, detailed and perhaps calculating.  This is a great time to honor your body as well as your mind and can be an opportune period for finding solutions to our everyday problems as well as taking a better look at how we can improve our diets and take more responsibility for our health and general welfare.

With the Full Moon in Pisces leading to the New Moon in Aries on 27 March, the period between the two is an especially good time to release bad habits and let go of unfavorable energies that have been effecting the mental and physical parts of our lives.  Doing this will help us prepare for the new opportunities represented by the New Moon in Aries, the first sign of the zodiac and the beginning of a new cycle of the signs.

Mars goes into Pisces 15 March

When Mars, the fiery planet that rules our initiative, force, action and aggression goes into the intuitive, dreamy, creative and emotional Water sign of Pisces, a strong sensitive expression and creative activation can be seen in our lives.  This is a time when we can assert ourselves more when it comes to the dreamy and feeling side of our natures, and all compassionate, humanitarian and spiritual areas of our worlds come into focus.   The need to act and move (Mars) is now best expressed in a flowing, gentle, ethereal and psychic way.  Hence this is a time when we take more into consideration about how we “feel” regarding situations rather than looking at the practical applications and solutions to problems.  It's a time when much of our personal energy is directed “inwards”, and so we may be more meditative, introspective and introverted.  We would rather make peace than fight, meditate rather than activate, ponder rather than push ahead, and create rather than tear down.  This is a very favorable time for all things having to do with spiritual work, music, dance, poetry, artistry, romance and cooperative efforts – and is an wonderful opportunity to manifest more of these things into our life.

During a Mars-Pisces pairing we can seek out more time for quiet retreat, private reflection, and perhaps find ourselves daydreaming with regard to the intimacy issues of our lives.  But keep in mind that what we feel now may be more idealized and romanticized when it comes to love issues (especially with Venus still retrograde) – so although it is a very quixotic and amorous period, it is probably not a time when we have the most realistic view of our significant others. So enjoy the romance, just don't rush into commitments during this time.

Sun goes into Aries 21 March – Equinox

The Sun moves into Aries, the first sign of the zodiac representing aggressive, pioneering, and initiating energy, on 21 March. In the northern hemisphere the Sun entering Aries represents the spring equinox, while for us in the Southern Hemisphere it represents the autumn equinox.  Either way, the Sun moving into its 'exalted' sign of Aries signifies a time of renewal in many ways – mostly having to do with making clear decisions, taking new initiatives, expressing stronger individuality and an opportunity to take better control of our lives.

As the Sun moves from the mystical and sensitive water sign of Pisces into the more combative and courageous fire sign of Aries, we can see the progression of our dreams being brought into reality.  With Mars being the ruler of Aries, we now can see the transition from the compassionate “we” mentality of Pisces into the aggressive “me” mentality of Aries, signifying the start of a shift between the more unconscious sides of our natures to the conscious.   The Aries energy is one that approaches life in a “head on” manner, is the first to start, can be pioneering in their approach to life – so with this type of energy is full swing by the 21st we can strive to do away with any weakness, shyness or unsure areas of our lives.   Just be aware of the other side of the Aries trait when you are jumping in to your new endeavors – there may be a tendency to be too aggressive, impatient, self-oriented and impulsive now– so keep an eye to this tendency especially when dealing with others.   The lesson perhaps is to learn to balance the Pisces/Aries modality in our lives!

New Moon in Aries 27 March

A New Moon indicates a time of renewal, regeneration, and when we have the opportunity to begin again in the areas that we feel strongly about.  This period brings a window of possibilities where we can make a fresh start regarding the projects and plans we have been considering.  A New Moon occurring in the straightforward sign of Aries is a great occasion to start taking the initiative when it comes to manifesting our desires.   This may be a time when we come into greater awareness of what our personal goals, ambitions and directions are and how we can best utilize our energies them for further personal fulfillment in the weeks ahead.   This is a great time to take action, make the effort, and try something new with more confidence and assurance in our step.  This is a favorable period for expressing yourself in more forthright and self-reliant ways, and so we may find that the independent side of our personalities get to shine at this time!  We are less fearful with an Aries energy behind us, so this is a time when you can operate from strength and courage and determination.  Remember to keep the impulsive and combative side of your Aries expression in check when you show that more forceful side of yourself – exude strength and initiate your activities with positive energy rather than ego!

Happy March – and Keep Looking Up!

KEEP LOOKING UP!
By GiGi Sosnoski

A New Beginning: An Astrological view of January-February 2009

The first two months of 2009 are bringing a lot of change.   Many people around the world see this as a new time of hope – where joining together for a common good and exploring new possibilities can make a difference in our own lives and the world around us.   No doubt there will be some challenges that lay ahead for us all, but we can utilize new opportunities for increased awareness and progress forward with more wisdom, having learned from past limitations.

A new start with Jupiter

2009 began with Jupiter, the benevolent planet representing expansion and the broadening of our horizons, moving into the Air sign of Aquarius on the 6 th. Jupiter in Aquarius, which lasts for about a year, marks a period of more liberal philosophy blending with humanitarian efforts – a time   given more to philanthropic outlooks and endeavors.   This is a period emphasizing equality, the breaking down of barriers, and finding unique ways of problem solving while championing the individual's ideals and expression.   It may also be a time of more Universal or “New Age” spirituality, being more empathic to worthwhile causes, feeling as if we are “all in this together” and united in our shared needs and problem solving goals.   In Aquarius, Jupiter brings an increased awareness of social justice, equal rights, as well as improvements in wide-reaching humanistic endeavors.   This is a year when we have the opportunity to be more aware of the positive changes that we can manifest in our own lives while also being cognizant of the suffering of others and what we can do to liberate the oppressed.

Mercury Retrograde

Mercury, the planet representing expression, thought, and interactions with others went retrograde (“backwards”) on the 11 th of January, signaling a period of reassessment and reconsideration.   Mercury retrograde is a tricky time, and plans that were implemented or agreements that are made during this period will often end up unraveling or not materialize into the outcome we were hoping for.   A retrograde Mercury usually brings communication flaws, machinery failures, and is not a favorable time for signing contacts, beginning new endeavors or exchanging promises. Mercury started off the year in the inventive and ingenious sign of Aquarius, but then “backed-up” into the conservative and austere sign of Capricorn on 22 January.   This switching gears mid-steam made many of us feel like we were stalling on numerous issues in our lives, or that we did not have the momentum to keep going or were not moving fast enough!   Good news then that Mercury finally completes its “reversing” (and delaying!) cycle on 1 February and goes full-speed-ahead once again, bringing more fortunate momentum rather than stagnation.   From February onwards things should flow more easily when it comes to our plans and projects and decision and directions, so this is the time to rev up your engines and move forward, implementing those goals and dreams for 2009.

Mercury retrograde cycles are not all bad as they give us the opportunity to look back on past experiences and learn from them, bringing new awareness to how we can progress forward with more constructive growth and positive direction for our future goals.   This can be a favorable time for realizing what issues or situations are no longer worthwhile for us to carry forward into the new year.   So it is a good time to ask yourself what lessons have been learned in the months gone by and which ones do we want to bring with us into 2009 and which ones don't we want to repeat.

Aquarius New Moon (Solar Eclipse)

The first New Moon of the year, which was also a solar eclipse, occurred in the sign of Aquarius on 26 January.   This signals a time when we may feel a new emotional connections to like-minded groups and associations, and can represent a time of coming together for a shared experience of hope and renewal. This may bring a new awareness regarding humanitarian efforts as we feel closely tied to the suffering of others.   This New Moon can highlight new discussions and thought regarding intuitive energy, making use of our individual expression when it comes to esoteric approaches, and may also be an opportune time to begin a unique health regimes.   An Aquarian Moon represents a time when we may feel more secure with the intellectual side of ourselves rather than the emotional, but it does represent a “yes we can” approach to getting things done and “we are one” mentality.   This is a time when we are more aware of what is needed for the common good, as opposed to our personal wants, and what we began at the New Moon can culminate at the Full Moon in February. But since this New Moon was also a solar eclipse, it has a deeper and longer-lasting impact than usual, influencing the whole first half of the year.

Venus into Aries

Venus, the Goddess of Love planet that represents our relationships, affections, social urges, and creative expression moves to the first sign of the Zodiac – aggressive Aries – on 3 February.   We move from the exalted Venus position of ethereal Pisces to begin the constellation cycle again with ardent and assertive Aries.   This is a strong time when we can express appreciation of our partnerships while also honoring our own personal need for freedom.   This represents a period of bold love gestures, pursuing pleasure with loved ones, initiating relationships, new creative projects, and perhaps a more aggressive approach to art and fashion.   With Venus manifesting through Aries we see a time when our values and needs are more pressing and may be first in our consideration when approaching new situations.   This is a strong time for socializing, networking, getting out there and making yourself known.   But be wary of hasty action when it comes to expressing yourself and your feelings of passion for others – you just may jump into things a bit too quickly or abruptly at this juncture.   A good rule now is think before pouncing!

Mars into Aquarius

Mars, the fiery planet that represents our energies, actions, aggression, and assertive expression moves into mentally-inclined Aquarius on 5 February.   This brings more innovative awareness, a breaking away from the traditional energy of the staunch Capricorn sign that Mars previously occupied, and now represents an unwillingness to follow the beaten track.   Mars paired with Aquarius is another shot in the arm for humanitarian efforts, and shows a time for imaginative and inventive activity, while also being able to fight for the causes we believe in and sticking up for the underdog.   Here we see the “group” dynamic emphasized while the appreciation for individuals and their rights are also honored.   This is a time highlighting   “We” vs. “Me” activities, a sense of rebellion perhaps as we break away from the traditional/stagnant/old fashioned ways of doing things that no longer seem appropriate.   This is a fortunate time for taking the initiative toward new learning, unique understanding, group interactions, and putting forth a new strategy that would work more favorably for our future manifestations.

Saturn opposition Uranus

Saturn and Uranus, two of the outer planets in our solar system, have been in strong alignment for the past year and will be exact in their opposition to each other on 5 February.   With the Saturn-Uranus dichotomy, we see two celestial bodies that are diametrically opposed in their energies and considered enemies in their approach to activities in our lives.   Saturn is like a strict school master that likes to have the lessons laid out, traditional ways of learning honored, with much strict structure and hard rules in place.   Whereas Uranus is like the rebellious Bohemian, wanting to break free of the “old-school” way of doing things and find inventive and perhaps disruptive ways of expressing change.

Leo Full Moon (Lunar Eclipse)

This year we celebrate the Full Moon in the outgoing and warm sign of Leo on the 10 th of February.   As we go from a more inter-personal intellectual experience of the New Moon in Aquarius into a more magnanimous self-oriented period of a Full Moon in Leo, the focus swings from “we” to more “me” energy.   As the Moon represents our moods, receptivity, feelings and instincts, this is a period when our emotional needs for recognition, praise and attention are brought to the forefront.   This is also represent a full-on time for expressing love and affection for those we care about and can be a time of gatherings and galas showcasing our hospitable natures with a bit of theatrical behavior thrown in!   There can be a bit more drama than usual when it comes to emotional encounters and issues – and it can represent a time of high energy and activity related to children and enjoyment.    This Full Moon may also be a time when we are wanting to express our personal tastes and desires – just be aware of excessive ego energies and pride that may come along with this. Since it's a lunar eclipse, the Full Moon energies are even more intense than usual, and we need to be extra careful to keep our emotional balance.

Mercury into Aquarius

Mercury, the planet ruling transportation, communication and new expression again moves into the sign of Aquarius on the 15 th of February.   This brings a time of more analytical and inquisitive directions, and shows a period where we become more socially oriented, joining up with like- minded associates, and appreciating new forms of communication and new teaching concepts.   This is a favorable time for expressing our inner muse and saying things in our own unique and creative ways.   This can mark a month for more progressive ideas, inventive concepts with regard to new undertakings, and breaking away from the traditional ways of thinking and speaking.   During this period we may also see more expressive rebellion regarding the old ways of thinking, with individual ideals contributing to a collective voice.   The Mercury-Aquarian pairing may bring forth a time when we have an individual say in situations but it then manifests into a common goal.   This energy, which lasts into mid-March, can suggest more interest in “new age” or progressive types of education and learning, (perhaps some eccentric views being expressed too), and can be a time of further humanitarian interests which leads to more of a universal voice.   This is a time when you can put any avant guard or unique thoughts, writings, speech into practical action as it can also mark a time of clear sightedness, forward-looking, and seeing things from a new point of view.

Sun into Pisces

The Sun energy, which represents our ego, our will, our personality and our personal power, moves into the sensitive and feeling water sign of Pisces on 19 February.   This highlights a time when we are further able to use our imagination, express our feelings, meditate on the possibilities, seek more universal awareness, and feel empathy for all around us.   This last sign of the Zodiac represents the ending of a cycle, and brings strong intuitive energy, feelings of being “at one” with others and nature, as well as more creative and artistic awareness.   This can be a period where we are more aware of our moods, the unspoken “vibe” of a situation, and the thoughts of others.   It may also be a favorable time for opening up to new spirituality, romance, hope, faith, belief and compassion.   But beware of wearing rose-colored glasses or giving away too much of yourself during this altruistic phase.   Also be aware of mood swings or being overly sensitive to things at this time.   You can certainly benefit from this phase by taking more time for introspection, meditation and dreaming of possibilities you want to manifest for your future.

Pisces New Moon

The New Moon in the sign of Pisces on 25 February brings a time of renewal and new beginnings regarding our beliefs and feelings of intuitive energy.   This may represent a time of deeper awareness and holistic undertakings for the weeks ahead.   This is a period of more refection, selfless concerns, feeling more at one with the Universe and restored metaphysical beliefs.   With the New Moon expressing its energies through the Piscean view, this can make for a period of new spiritual or philosophical approaches, and brings a more sympathetic response to our natures as we take into account the needs of others.   This dreamy and responsive time can be beneficial for the appreciation of all things of beauty – in nature, in others, and in ourselves. As we may be a bit more shy or hesitant in expressing our needs at this time, beware of a tendency toward surrendering into fantasy, or escaping into our own worlds as a way of retreating from the harsh realities.

Obamamania?

Astrology shows the hopes and potential of the Obama presidency.   The planetary energies for January and February certainly point to a new beginning, perhaps being encouraged forward by new leadership that has greater compassion and wider-reaching vision for positive change.   The “Yes We Can!” mentality represented by Jupiter moving into the sign of Aquarius, the Aquarius solar eclipse (which occurred just after the Obama inauguration), and the strong Saturn opposition Uranus all point to new change!   The Saturn opposition Uranus occurs three more times between now and August 2010, marking continuing challenges to the old way of doing things.   This energy actually occurred in exactness for the first time on the day of the U.S. elections when the very Uranian Barack Obama (promising change, raised as a child of the world, unique) won against the Saturnian John McCain (old, rigid, conventional), so we can expect the energy of this Saturn-Uranus confrontation to flavor Obama's whole time as President.

KEEP LOOKING UP!
December Forecast
by GiGi Sosnoski

Knowing the movements of the Sun and planets through the Astrological signs alerts us to energies that will be influencing not just ourselves, but everyone.   By taking these energies into account, we can be more effective in whatever we do.   Here's a look at what's coming up for December...

In the first part of December we see Venus, planet of beauty and relationships, flowing into the Air sign of Aquarius on the 8 th.   This will energize our interactions with others, while at the same time helping us appreciate our own individualistic and unique expression.   There is a focus on widening our circle of contacts, and perhaps feeling more love (impersonal) and compassion for others.   This is a time when more humanitarian feelings are forthcoming, and giving to others and contributing to worthwhile organizations will be even more of a focus than usual as we're entering into this holiday season.

On the 12 th Mercury, the planet representing thinking and communications, leaves the cheerful and exuberant Fire sign of Sagittarius and moves into the more conservative and practical Earth sign of Capricorn.   This is an excellent time for getting organized, making better use of those to-do lists, and being more practical in our thoughts and communications. With Mercury in Capricorn we can have a better sense of what is important in our lives, and gain greater focus when it comes to the details of goal planning for the year ahead – so stop dawdling and focus on results!   This is also a good period for getting a better perspective on what we have accomplished during this past year and what we can bring to fruition in 2009.   As we are thinking more conservatively at this time, we may find ourselves dealing with others in a more serious and conscientious way.

The last Full Moon of 2008 occurs in the versatile Air sign of Gemini on Friday the 13 th, and combined with Mercury in Capricorn it makes this a time to finish up written projects, finalize communications, get your thoughts in order and certainly communicate what is on your mind. You may find that your reactions are quicker and that you are more perceptive and expressive of your feelings at this time.   This is a great time to network with others, be witty and charming, and juggle both domestic and social issues. There can be a feeling of restlessness or nervous tension as much activity and dealings with others keeps things lively now.

The Summer Solstice (Southern Hemisphere) occurs when the Sun moves into strong-willed and organized Capricorn on December 22 nd.   Although occurring during a period given to holidays and celebration, this is actually an excellent time to plan your goals and map out what you hope to achieve in the year ahead. Common sense and caution is highlighted now and life is taken a bit more seriously with decisions to be made and plans to put in place.   This can also be auspicious for starting a new practice or perhaps a new spiritual discipline which can be fully utilized in the months ahead.   But don't short yourself on fun - this longest day of the year has enough hours for both frivolity and practicality!

Energetic and active Mars joins the Sun in achievement-oriented Capricorn on the 27 th, bringing even more of a focus on practical activities and disciplined actions for the next five weeks. This is an excellent period for focusing your energies on the things you want to manifest.   The ability to concentrate and use good strategy skills and practical tactics to build a plan of action is highlighted.   This is a favorable time to make your intentions known and to outline steps of positive action to cause your hopes to become reality.   A perfect planetary alignment for getting those New Year resolutions put into place and then activated in the weeks ahead!

The final New Moon of the year, on December 28 th in Capricorn, asks us to consider wisely the areas of practical concerns that we would like to bring forward in the new year. This is a time when we can open ourselves to new opportunities for improvement and positive change. The practical Earth sign of Capricorn wants stability and reliability and looks to long term and steady gains as a form of comfort and emotional security.   We may feel a stronger sense of tradition now as we view our past and the triumphs and failures of 2008 in an effort to establish more order and structure going forward.   Whatever difficulties that occurred this year can be understood now as a valuable lesson for the future.   This is a time of seeking emotional balance regarding home and family, as we contemplate our directions for the months to come.

Keep Looking Up!
November Forecast

by Motivational Astrologer GiGi Sosnoski

Astrology is the study of how the planets in the heavens coincide with the events here on Earth.   In this article we'll take a look at the planetary energies for November, giving us insights into how to make effective use of our own energies in the month ahead.

November starts off with Mercury leaving the sign of cheery Sagittarius and moving into the intense sign of Scorpio on the 5 th, giving us more of an investigational and resourceful attitude in our dealings with others.   This is a good time to focus on the hidden agendas that may present themselves in our world – just in time for the election!   It's also a time to look at how we communicate with others, and perhaps apply more willpower and determination in making ourselves heard.

Venus, the Goddess of Love planet, departs from the outgoing sign of Sagittarius and flows into the more practical and reserved sign of Capricorn on the 13 th.   Venus' month-long stay in the most conservative of the earth signs will emphasize our need for commitment in relationships, and perhaps what we need financially to feel secure.   This is a time to take both beauty and money into account when it comes to projects.   It's a great time to work on getting our spending in order, perhaps buy or sell artistic items for profit, entertain for business purposes, and think in terms of how to indulge on a budget.

Our sense of value and our creative instincts will be emphasized with the Full Moon in Taurus brightening the night sky, also occurring on November 13 th.   This will give a strong boost to our comfort and security needs, and help us manifest more of our inner artistic muse and sense of values for the rest of the month.

Mars moving into the nature loving energy of Sagittarius on November 16 th indicates a start of a great time to explore outdoor activities and take advantage of our love of adventure and travel.   This is a time when our actions may reflect more positive and outgoing efforts for making changes in our future.

The Sun joins Mars in the exuberant sign of Sagittarius on 22 nd November, followed by Mercury (the messenger of communications and transportation) on the 23 rd.   This strong Fire alignment represents a independent, enthusiastic and outspoken spirit within us, and will be emphasized even more when the New Moon joins the others in Sagittarius on the 28 th.   This strong Sagittarius influence in late November highlights a time for change, honesty, and a new direction in our own lives and perhaps even in the events on our planet.   It's a beneficial period to affirm our dreams for the future and to share a feeling of optimism and hope for positive times ahead. This can also be a important time to review the many spiritual blessings that we have in our lives.

The month ends with the highly anticipated Astrological event of Pluto entering the sign of Capricorn on November 27 th, after 12 years in exuberant Sagittarius.   This represents a major energy shift which will continue to unfold over the next 15 years, showing transformational (transcendental?) changes to world-wide economic, ecologic and esoteric matters.   Pluto is the planet of transformation, but it also represents the world economy, global leadership, metaphysical philosophies and environmental issues.   These are all areas where we're experiencing a significant wake-up call.

As Pluto leaves Sagittarius we bid farewell to a period that embraced overspending, speculative excess, natural resources dissipation, and extravagance (ego) of world leaders.   We had a glimpse of this change when Pluto first entered Capricorn in February of this year, and the financial bailouts began.   Pluto turned retrograde in April, moving back into exuberant Sagittarius, and economic tensions eased up a bit.   But when Pluto pushed forward again in September we saw panic hit the financial systems of the world, and massive bailouts were needed to avoid a total collapse.   Since Pluto won't actually complete its move into Capricorn until the end of November, it seems likely that the actions taken so far may not be enough to keep the financial system going, and events in late November through the end of the year may force more changes.

With Pluto now reflecting the seriousness of Capricorn we are entering into a time of a new global alignment focusing on practicality and accountability in all areas of finance. The next decade will be seen as a time for taking responsibility, putting things into more balance, and gaining a firmer footing in our personal and professional goals. Capricorn is a conservative sign that has much regard for discipline, organization and resourcefulness.   Capricorn is at its best when it is working hard, achieving, and watching the bottom line.   With Pluto now moving through this serious and ethical Earth sign we will be coming into a time of correction for all the over-board accumulation that has been part of our last decade.

This gives you a summary of the influences which will be applying to everyone in November. You can gain better awareness of how the energies apply to you personally by understanding where the planets are moving in your own Astrology chart - but that requires some study, or a reading from an Astrologer!   (See GiGi Sosnoski, Motivational Astrologer at http://www.KeepLookingUp.co.nz).

October 2008 Outlook

Astrology is a wonderful tool for self-awareness, self-activation and self-actualization.   Astrology gives us insight into how we can improve ourselves and how we interact with the situations and people around us.   In looking to the October skies we can gain a better appreciation for the planetary energies that play a part in our daily lives for the next month.

October starts off with the energy of a New Moon in the harmonious sign of Libra.   This gives us a great opportunity to explore our relationships and interactions with others.   The Libra energy is one that looks for equilibrium in relationships of all kinds, emphasizing the need to reach out to those we care about in a more social, refined and diplomatic manner.   Artistic and creative expression is highlighted, and it's a time when we can open ourselves to opportunities for new encounters that will be both mentally stimulating and balancing in our lives.   It's also a great time for bringing more balance to an existing relationship.   All this makes the first part of October a great time to stage or attend social occasions and mingle! The lunar cycle comes to culmination with the Full Moon in Aries on 15 th October, which can bring fulfillment of your efforts with others.

On 4 th October the action planet Mars moves into uncompromising Scorpio, which can bring a strong dose of focused energy and competitive determination in events.   Mars represents our energy, actions, and physicality - so this can be a time of seeing power issues and intense interactions taking place!   Just be aware of the potential for secretive or hidden agendas, and keep an open mind if more information comes to light.   This can be a great time for investigational research or seeking out the answers to deeper issues, but be wary of flair-ups in aggression or passionate anger (especially while Venus is also in Scorpio).

The Scorpio intensity of action becomes even more prevalent once the Sun joins Mars in Scorpio on 23 rd October, and takes on a more mental feel once Mercury also enters Scorpio on 5 th November. With elections coming up both here and in the United States, all this Scorpio intensity may manifest in some especially nasty political in-fighting.

Venus, the planet of beauty and relationships, moves from Scorpio into adventure-seeking Sagittarius on 18 th October. Venus is not very comfortable in Scorpio, often manifesting possessive and compulsive feelings. The change into Sagittarius brings a renewed vitality and stronger interest in beauty, travel, socializing, and finding inspiration in others. This “grass is greener” placement of Venus in Sagittarius makes it a beneficial time to bring more creativity in to our lives, take up an adventurous project, or learn a new artistic expression. Our love of nature, concern for the environment, and more hopeful expressions of love and inspired compassion can be highlighted at this time.

The New Moon in Scorpio on 29 th October helps to emphasize our deepest life-and-death themes and tap into our unconscious issues.   This is a time to clear out, throw out, recreate, and start again. A good opportunity to deep-clean on a physical, emotional and spiritual level leading up to the Full Moon in Taurus on 13 th November.

I'll finish with a reminder that we are still riding the waves of Mercury Retrograde in the sign of Libra (yes/no - do we/don't we?). This apparent “backward” movement of the planet ruling communications, knowledge and information, and reasoning ability lasts until the 16 th of October.   Mercury retrograde periods, occurring three times a year, represent times of confusion and mix- ups in our speaking or thought processes.   The most productive use of this time is to plan, research, and review what you want to put in place after Mercury goes direct.   It's interesting to note that bail-out agreements have been in yo-yo motion during this time in the United States. Since the financial rescue arrangement was passed during a Mercury Retrograde time, it's likely that its final outcome will not be in keeping with its initial hopeful energy. I'll have more on that next month when I talk about heavy-hitter Pluto moving into the sign of Capricorn.

This is just a brief overview of the planetary energies during the month of October, which applies to everyone.   You can gain better awareness of how the energies apply in your life by understanding where the planets are moving in your own Astrology chart - but that requires some study, or a reading from an Astrologer!   (See GiGi Sosnoski, Motivational Astrologer at http://www.KeepLookingUp.co.nz ).

September 2008 - Planning your month ahead

Astrology is a powerful tool for answering life's questions and for gaining insight into ourselves and others. Being aware of the planetary energies and how they may effect us can be a great advantage when planning for your month ahead.

Astrology's premise is that we can come to better understand ourselves and those around us by noting the planets and their position in correlation with the events on earth. Looking at the planetary movements and energies for September is a great way to arrange our upcoming activities to ensure a successful outcome.

The month of September starts out carrying the energy of a New Moon in the dutiful and detailed sign of Virgo. This makes the first part of September an excellent time to tap into the Virgo areas of our lives, helping us to examine ourselves and our general wellbeing. This period is wonderful for beginning a new health regime, looking at the finer details of our lives, and examining ways we can manifest more order in our daily routines.

Knowing when a New Moon occurs is always helpful as it gives us 13 times a year to start fresh and to begin again (no need for that pesky once-a-year New Years Resolution!) A New Moon signifies a time when we can start anew and set into motion the things we want to actualize by the Full Moon, which occurs about two weeks later.

This New Moon in Virgo activates the analytical and rational sides of our nature, assisting us in tapping into a more orderly and detailed expression of our selves. The New Moon progression from the outgoing and generous sign of Leo into the more introverted and shy sign of Virgo gives us the opportunity to take our big plans and make them substantial by reviewing their finer points and details.

During this Virgo lunar cycle our responses will be more prudent and meticulous toward our work and to those we care about, thus a great time to take care of all the items on your to-do list. Although we should guard against becoming too fussy or critical at this time, the best use of this period is to keep productive and to incorporate better organizational strategies for our future directions and goals.

The New Moon in Virgo is followed by the culminating Full Moon in the sensitive sign of Pisces on 15 th September. As we go from a New Moon in Virgo to a Full Moon in Pisces this month, we can learn that perhaps by starting to organize ourselves in a more efficient manner during one, we can manifest more of our dreams and creativity by the time of the other!

The Full Moon in Pisces encourages us to be more aware of our intuitive energy, and gives us an opportunity to explore our spiritual and creative nature. It is an excellent chance to work more with our dreams, visualizations and artistic expression. This is a time when we can feel more sympathy for others, express more compassion in our every day dealings, and be more receptive to those we come in contact with.

In the two weeks following this Full Moon you can use the Lunar energy to your best advantage by getting rid of what is no longer necessary in your life in order to make way for the new, as we move toward the next New Moon and the start of a new cycle. This is a wonderful time to make a difference by giving to a charity, donating time to help someone, or contributing to a worthwhile cause.

The 23rd and 24th of September is an especially active time Astrologically, when the Sun enters Libra, Venus enters Scorpio, and Mercury goes retrograde. These changes represent some major differences in how we feel the energy of the planets, and to have these variances occurring in such quick succession can make for a confusing time.

To start with, the Sun enters the diplomatic sign of Libra on the 23 rd, bringing with it the start of the Spring season. This Spring Solstice is an excellent time to contemplate what you have achieved so far this year, and what you can do to create more balance and equilibrium in your life going forward.

It's an opportunity to celebrate the season of renewal and begin new ways of bringing more creative joy into our lives. This is a time of opening ourselves up to more social and gracious interactions, and corresponds to a time of well-moderated beauty, balance and proportion in what we do and how we express ourselves.

During the first part of September the relationship planet Venus is also in Libra, one of the signs it is said to “rule” - meaning that the sign is especially well suited to the nature of Venus. Venus is the planet dealing with love and attraction, and in the sign of Libra it works through balance and harmony, and wanting to give as much as receive. On the 24 th of September Venus moves into Scorpio, with a very different feeling. Where Libra is about balance and harmony, Scorpio is about desire and intensity.

Venus is said to be in “detriment” in Scorpio, the opposite of its rulership of Libra. In Scorpio, the Venus attraction can become possessive and compulsive. But Venus in Scorpio also gives us more insight into how deeply we are feeling about others, and infuses the areas of relationships and pleasure with much passion and intensity! This is where personal desire takes over, and “I want” and self-gratification becomes the main focus. It represents an opportune time to get in touch more with our physical side and open up to more feelings of desire with loved ones.

With the energy of Venus in Scorpio we can better focus on the deeper issues of our emotions and feelings, perhaps exploring areas of relationships that can be renewed and infused with more vitality. This is a time when the energies that we manifest are just as intense for love as they are for jealousy, possessiveness or rage. Be aware of which you are manifesting and why, but use this time to get to the bottom of issues of passion rather than suppressing your feelings.

Also on the 24th of September, Mercury goes into retrograde. This apparent “backward” movement of the planet of communications lasts until the 16th of October. Mercury rules all things having to do with our thought process, information, short-distance travel, decision making, and all forms of networking and communications, and when it “reverses” all these areas are affected.

Mercury retrograde periods, occurring three times a year, represent a time when things seem to be in mis-step regarding our thoughts, expressions, and movements. This is important to keep in mind when it comes to making major decisions, or starting new projects, or agreeing to a new endeavors – basically, DON'T!

Mercury retrograde is a time of delays, miscommunications, reconsiderations, mechanical breakdowns, and general back-peddling to correct errors. Although the Libra energy of Mercury at this time wants us to reach out and harmonize with others in business and personal life, the retrograde motion means we'll probably fail to do that effectively. Now is a period when we actually turn more inward and toward self-analysis, rather than reach outward to explore new intellectual experiences with others.

As Mercury rules all communications and short-distance travel, be aware that this time is ripe for computer and technology mishaps, media misquotes, commuter delays, transportation breakdowns, typo's, misprints, and general information mayhem. This is NOT a time to start a major new endeavor, enroll in courses of study, agree to contracts, or make major purchases (you will likely be taking the item back for being faulty). As a general rule, if you begin something during a Mercury retrograde the outcome will be different than what you had originally planned for.

The most productive use of this Mercury retrograde time is to plan, research, and review what you want to put in place after the 16th of October. Once Mercury goes direct on the 16 th you'll have a better chance for successful results and forward motion in your efforts.

Ending the month of September, the New Moon in harmonious Libra on the 29th gives us the green light to explore our relationships and dealings with others. This is a time when we can open ourselves to opportunities for new encounters that will be both mentally stimulating and balancing in our lives – or for bringing more balance to an existing relationship. It makes the first part of October a great time to stage or attend social occasions and mingle!
